Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes

The concept of patriotism remains one of our most contested virtues. Living at a time of intense political polarization, patriotism becomes deeply politicized. On the right, it is frequently confused with nationalism, while on the left it has been rejected in favor of some form of multiculturalism. My goal is to reclaim patriotism from both extremes.
In our forum, I hope to consider some of the following questions: what is patriotism and what makes American patriotism unique? What do we do when love of country comes into conflict with other kinds of loyalties? How does patriotism differ from nationalism? Can patriotism be self-critical thus avoiding the trap of “my country right or wrong?” And finally, is patriotism compatible with protest and civil disobedience?
