Kidding Around – "Time Machine, K.A." – WMAQ Channel 5 (Complete Episode, 6/21/1980)

3 min read

Here’s another episode (transferred from a ¾” Umatic dub of a 2″ Quad tape) of Kidding Around on WMAQ Channel 5, hosted by Steve Smith and Carrie Fischer (no, not the “Star Wars” actress), with a “time machine” motif looking at the season gone by and highlights of selected episodes indicating a season finale.

No commercials, PSA’s or promos, alas.

Includes:

CG slate indicating episode number P-2304, air date and “Take 1”

Opening titles, followed by preview of coming show, activation of time machine and bumper (voiceover by Ed Grennan)

Segment 2, with a look at Carrie’s first episode; various episodes of different dancing (roller skating, disco, tap, folk dancing); puppet shows, balloon demonstrations, karate moves, miming to songs, fife and drum corps, synchronized jump rope, sawing in half, baton twirling and singer/guitarist; celebrity news involving Erik Estrada, Shaun Cassidy, Willie Aames, Connie Needham, Robby Benson, John Travolta, Marilu Henner, Farrah Fawcett, Lee Majors, Ryan O’Neal, Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, Victor Willis, John Schneider, Randi Oakes… (after that, we get into Chipmunk territory as the voiceover gets more and more sped up); interviews with Shaun, Mary K. Lombardi, The Jacksons, Rex Smith and Tantrum; various animals; and Steve’s impression of a cricket-eating chameleon

Segment 3, looking at the music played (from The Charlie Daniels Band to Cheap Trick to Donna Summer to The Whispers to Elvis); bands including a Beatles tribute group, Star Fire and The Moonlighters; various cheerleading groups; and numerous riddles; before show ends, the time machine malfunctions and the hosts end up inside it, where presumably they’ll remain for the duration of the summer break
