Sunrisers at a glance
From Marine Memorial to Sunrisers
The ensemble began in 1950 as the Marine Memorial Drum and Bugle Corps of Nassau County and reorganized as a senior corps in 1953. The Sunrisers name grew from John Hodge hearing The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise. DCA participation began in 1966, and the corps won the American Legion national championship in 1968.
The first DCA title arrived in 1977 by 0.05 over Hawthorne Caballeros. Additional championships followed in 1978, 1982, 1983, 1987, and a shared 1988 title. The 1987 award followed cancellation of finals because of field and weather conditions, with preliminaries determining the champion. Later history included interruptions, a 2007 Class A title, a return to Long Island, and renewed field participation in 2024 after rebuilding in 2022โ2023. Official corps history.
Programs across different eras
The official past-season index lists Come Fly With Me (2015), House of Cards (2016), Mirage (2017), Outside In (2018), Into the Deep Blue (2019), and Portraits by Gershwin (2021). It also links the Drum Corps Xperience archive for a broader production list. These titles give listeners an entry into the recent repertoire without implying that each era used the same ensemble size, touring schedule, or competitive class. Official production index.
For historical viewing, identify whether footage comes from a field contest, a parade, a standstill, or a virtual-era performance. Those settings place very different demands on visual and musical design. The older senior-corps terminology is historical and should not be interpreted as an age ceiling for the current all-age program.
