Spirit of Atlanta at a glance

A fast rise and an enduring musical identity

Freddy Martin founded the corps in 1976, and its first competitive season was 1977. The organization’s anniversary history traces the leap from twenty-third in 1977 to sixth in 1978 and fourth in 1979. Georgia on My Mind became a central musical association. Fourth in 1980 and numerous later finalist appearances established Spirit as an enduring presence, despite periods of rebuilding.

The history also identifies the influence of brass educator Jim Ott, who died in 1980, and notes color guard caption championships in 1985 and 1987. Later finalist periods included 2002–2003, 2005–2007, and 2011–2013. These milestones show distinct generations of performance rather than a single unchanging version of the corps. Interruption, accountability, and SpiritSAFE

The 2022 season interruption belongs in a complete history. DCI published a January 9, 2022 statement concerning Spirit. Readers should consult that primary statement directly rather than treating later promotional language as a complete account. The corps’ current safety page describes the subsequent development of SpiritSAFE and its deployment for the 2023 season. DCI statement; SpiritSAFE information.
