History & identity

Southwind began with an organizing effort in Montgomery in late 1980. Founder Michael Terry’s account explains how local students who had seen the 1980 DCI Championships wanted a corps closer to home; rehearsals began that winter and the first tour followed in 1981.

Its 1992 Division II championship became a major milestone. Terry’s published recollection describes the emotional significance of returning to Whitewater, where he had marched in DCI’s first championship twenty years earlier, and watching Southwind win its own title.

What makes this corps distinctive

Southwind’s history spans more than one hometown. The Montgomery, Lexington, and Mobile chapters should be kept visible when identifying recordings, uniforms, and alumni experiences. Its classification also changed over time, so a historical Division II result should not be labeled as a World Class championship.

Legacy & related chapters

Relocations and inactive seasons are part of Southwind’s story rather than evidence of several unrelated corps. Dates on individual media items should be used to determine which chapter is represented.
