Madison, WI · DRUMCORPS.NET PROFILE
Madison, Wisconsin • DCI World Class • Re-established 1938 • A Forward Performing Arts program
Two beginnings and a lasting identity
The earliest Madison Boy Scouts drum-and-bugle ensemble formed in December 1920 through Lewis Kessler’s work with the Four Lakes council. Its first public performance followed in May 1921, but that initial operation later ceased. Business leaders revived the idea in the 1930s, and the corps was re-established on February 8, 1938 under E. J. Hess with C. H. Beebe. Beebe soon became director and remained in that role until 1968. Official history
The official organization distinguishes those early roots from continuous operation beginning in 1938. Its stated values are growth, wellness, and respect, within a mission of music education, character, leadership, and self-discipline. The familiar crowd-pleasing identity is an artistic tradition rather than a complete description of what a member does every day: preparation, peer responsibility, physical work, and accepting feedback are part of participation. Milestones and a historical viewing route
The 1975 championship remains a defining archival performance. DCI’s retrospective records a 91.500 final score, ahead of Santa Clara Vanguard’s 91.000, and connects the achievement with both precision and audience impact. The footage also documents a very different activity: symmetrical drill, carried percussion instruments, and rules governing when performers could enter the field. Watch those details as historical practice rather than applying today’s visual expectations backward. DCI 1975 retrospective
The alumni organization maintains historical material, including a journal of the corps’ 1988 European tour. It is a useful source for member perspectives and chronology alongside DCI’s event records. Original reminiscences add detail about lived experience, while placements should still be checked against the relevant official results. Madison Scouts alumni history
