History and organizational connections

Impulse Youth Arts Organization developed in 1998 through Southern California drum corps alumni. Its equipment-partner history records multiple related educational ensembles and projects, including Rhythm Regiment, winter guard, and the establishment of Pulse Percussion. These historical connections do not establish that every program is currently operated under the same administration. IYAO history at equipment partner

The major competitive milestone is the 2006 DCI Division III championship in Madison, Wisconsin, with Me, Myself and I. DCI also records Impulse as that season’s Division III Spirit of Disney Award recipient. The award recognized entertainment qualities, while the championship was a separate competitive result. The historical Division III title should be retained with its original class name. IYAO history at equipment partner; DCI Spirit of Disney award archive

A recent production: Around the Table

The 2026 program, Around the Table, began with board games, cards, and family game night. The official introduction describes an emotional sequence of competition, conflict, apology, and community. Familiar game imagery gave the design an accessible surface, while the relationships between players provided the deeper story. Peter Connell is identified as corps director in that production account. 2026 production introduction

Training, experience, and school commitments

The general FAQ welcomes all experience levels and describes teaching support for performers changing from woodwind or trombone to a corps brass instrument. It identifies winter rehearsals followed by more frequent work in late spring and summer. The page says school activities take priority and conflicts can be discussed, but candidates should obtain a written understanding of their own commitments before contracting. Membership FAQ

For a first-time performer, the useful preparation questions are caption-specific: what music or movement must be ready, whether an instrument is supplied, what to bring, and how individual feedback will be delivered. A positive camp experience is valuable, but a season decision also requires the full calendar and contract. Ask how members practice between rehearsals and who answers packet questions.
