Colts at a glance
The Colts are a World Class drum and bugle corps based in Dubuque, Iowa, and the senior competitive ensemble of the Colts Youth Organization. They are distinct from both Colt Cadets, the organization’s developmental Open Class corps, and the Indianapolis football team. The official program describes a national summer tour with roughly thirty performances in a typical year, ending at DCI World Championships. Official Colts program.
Dubuque roots and a changing identity
American Legion Post 6 established the Junior Dukes in 1963 for students in the tri-state area. The ensemble later used the Legionnaires and Colt .45 names before adopting Colts in 1976. The organization’s younger Cadets program began in 1967. The history reflects a community institution that changed its image while preserving a local educational purpose. The corps reached ninth place at the 1995 DCI championship, an important early high point. Its 1996 production explored John Rutter’s Magnificat. Official history.
A return to finals: 2007 to 2022
DCI’s retrospective documents the distance between the corps’ 2007 finals appearance and its 2022 return. Equinox finished tenth in 2007 with 86.150, moving up a place on finals night. Years outside the top twelve included close races and changing strengths, rather than a single uniform competitive story. The 2021 Leap of Faith production belonged to DCI’s noncompetitive Celebration Tour.
In 2022, The Silk Road brought the Colts back to finals in eleventh with 87.200. That was the corps’ highest final score at the time, not a claim about all later seasons. DCI’s return-to-finals history.
The organization’s own season summary identifies a broad musical palette for The Silk Road, including Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass, Joe Hisaishi, Aaron Zigman, Aurel Hollo, and Led Zeppelin. The production offered a clear example of how one drum corps program can combine several source traditions within a single touring ensemble. Official 2022 season report.
2023: Where the Heart Is
For its sixtieth anniversary the corps chose a theme built around belonging, connection, and home. Its official announcement describes a production with telephone poles, direction signs, and porch settings, supported by music associated with artists including Pink Floyd, Pat Metheny Group, Randy Newman, and The Cinematic Orchestra. The design did not require every audience member to define home in the same way. 2023 show announcement.
DCI’s later analysis identifies an unusually personal detail: the repeated reference to 2300 Twin Valley Drive, the Dubuque headquarters. Tour-city signs connected the corps’ travel to its central home address. Watch how those place markers make a familiar “journey home” theme specific to the Colts’ own members and alumni. DCI’s production details.
The 2023 finals result was ninth at 90.263, two places above 2022 and the first top-ten finish since 2007. The placement supplies a competitive outcome; the local imagery explains why the anniversary show also mattered as organizational storytelling. Official 2023 championship report.
Member health and life on the road
The organization’s employment page describes its intention to employ two certified athletic trainers during spring training and travel with at least one ATC professional on tour. That is a published operating plan, not an independent audit of coverage on a given day. Families should confirm the medical arrangements for the actual season, emergency contacts, medication procedures, and incident-reporting route. Published staffing and medical plan.
