Colt Cadets at a glance
Colt Cadets is the Open Class corps of the Colts Youth Organization in Dubuque, Iowa. It serves developing performers, including beginners, and maintains a distinct identity from the World Class Colts. The program combines instruction, field performance, and summer travel. The official program page describes participation at both Open Class and World Class events; appearing at a World Class event does not change the corps’ Open Class designation. A junior corps within a long-running community organization
The Cadets began in fall 1967 as a younger ensemble associated with the older Dubuque corps. Sonia Hickson was the first director, assisted by older corps members. The names Colts and Colt Cadets became established in 1976. That relationship gives younger students a pathway into more advanced drum corps without making advancement automatic. Organizational history.
A dated 2024 program describes the members as predominantly middle- and high-school students and explains the two ensembles’ complementary roles. Some students join Cadets first; other prospective Colts performers find that the Cadets offer a better introduction. That is an educational placement rather than a judgment on a student’s long-term potential. 2024 organizational event program.
The 2010 finals milestone
The organization’s 2010 season report records a Colt Cadets Open Class finals appearance. Historical milestones are especially valuable for a developmental corps: a strong summer can mean both competitive progress and individual students gaining the experience needed for another year. A finals appearance in one season should not be presented as a guarantee for a later membership. 2010 season report.
A closer look at 2024: The Woods
The Woods used familiar fairytale imagery to create an accessible production for young performers and audiences. In DCI’s design interview, program coordinator Steve Lyons described an approach inspired by Little Red Riding Hood rather than a literal scene-by-scene retelling. The repertoire connected Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, Sondheim’s Into the Woods, and Jay Kennedy’s The Path Between the Mountains. The design moved from an opening forest adventure through a ballad and cottage setting to a chase.
For viewers, the useful question is how the arrangement makes the scene understandable with brass, percussion, movement, props, and flags. For prospective members, the same show illustrates the balance between achievable material and preparation for more advanced performance. DCI’s interview identifies Harlan Pfohl as director for that season and describes the corps’ intention to extend its visual vocabulary. DCI design interview.
The corps’ own release emphasizes that the returning designers built the production as both entertainment and a teaching vehicle. It is a useful companion source because it records the organization’s intended experience before the tour, while later scores describe competitive outcomes. Official 2024 show announcement.
