History & identity
The Guardsmen represented Schaumburg, Illinois, in DCI competition. Their late-1970s performances are particularly relevant to the history of the front ensemble, when percussion instruments began moving from marching harnesses to stationary positions on the field.
In a memoir published by DCI, Tom Scheffler described the Guardsmen’s experiments in 1978 and his role as a full-time stationary percussionist in 1979. The corps finished seventh that year. His account also recognizes the Kilties’ earlier use of concert pedal timpani, rather than giving every innovation to one organization.
What makes this corps distinctive
The Guardsmen archive connects competitive achievement with practical changes in instrument use. Grounding timpani allowed one player to handle several instruments and made room for different musical textures. The transition was gradual, and the first-person account records disagreement and experimentation rather than a single universally accepted invention date.
Key moments
- 1978The Guardsmen experimented with grounding timpani for part of the show.
- 1979A full-time stationary percussion role accompanied the corps’ seventh-place DCI finish.
