Carolina Crown at a glance

Carolina Crown is a World Class drum and bugle corps based in Fort Mill, South Carolina, serving performers through a nonprofit performing arts organization with roots in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its signature competitive achievement is the 2013 DCI World Championship. The organization also operates educational and community programs beyond the touring corps. From a Charlotte gathering to a national champion

The story began in January 1988 as the Charlotte Drum Corps Association, a meeting place for enthusiasts and alumni. Bill Loelius was its first president, Kevin Smith vice president, and Luanne Bialecki secretary-treasurer. A $1,000 Queen City Optimists donation in 1989 came with an expectation that the association establish a performing group. The decision to build a full corps, rather than only a parade percussion ensemble, gave Carolina Crown its direction. “Carolina” broadened the regional identity; “Crown” retained Charlotte’s Queen City connection. The original colors were teal and purple.

Crown became Division II champion in 1993. In 1995, its sixth competitive season, it reached the DCI top twelve for the first time, placing eleventh with Stormworks. The 2003 season brought a major redesign, the production Bell-issimo, new uniforms, and Jim Coates as program/faculty coordinator. These milestones help explain why Crown’s eventual championship represented organizational growth over decades. Crown’s institutional history.

The championship season: 2013 E=mc²

On August 10, 2013, Crown won its first World Class championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis with 98.300. DCI’s contemporary report credits the corps with the visual performance, brass, and general effect awards. It was DCI’s first new champion since 1996 and the first World Class champion to have previously won in Division II/Open Class. DCI championship report.

E=mc² paired its Einstein concept with musical and visual references that reward repeated viewing. DCI’s retrospective identifies music from Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach, Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra, and Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s Walking With Heroes. Counting voices, mathematical symbols, a sine wave, and a rotating prism made the science theme legible across the field. The purple uniforms became another memorable feature. Crown earned a perfect brass performance score at the championship. For a first viewing, follow how the counting connects otherwise different musical textures, then watch the large geometric forms on a second pass. DCI production analysis.

Beyond the title: understanding caption results

Overall placement and caption awards describe different accomplishments. DCI’s 2016 finals analysis lists Crown third overall at 97.088 while first in brass and music analysis that evening. Crown also won the season’s championship color guard award, calculated across three championship performances. A viewer should therefore distinguish a single finals-night caption placement from the multi-night award. That distinction is useful when comparing the corps’ brass reputation with its broader visual and ensemble record. 2016 official recap analysis.

Watching and studying Crown

DCI’s official brass-camera feature follows baritone performer Tim Malone during the 2013 victory encore. It offers a close perspective on movement, breath timing, and the physical demands that are less obvious from a high camera. Pair that perspective with the production retrospective rather than treating a short clip as the complete show. Full performances and recordings depend on current licensing and availability.
