History & identity

The 27th Lancers grew from the Revere drum corps community and became one of the founding members of Drum Corps International. Its identity paired a British-inspired visual style with music and drill that made the color guard a central part of the performance.

Danny Boy became the corps’ signature. DCI’s history describes evolving versions of a large rotating formation and innovations involving flags and rifles. The combination gave spectators a musical and visual moment they could recognize across different seasons.

What makes this corps distinctive

The Lancers’ legacy is closely tied to color guard presentation. Rather than treating the guard only as an accompaniment, the corps used coordinated equipment work and large formations to build the emotional conclusion of its shows. Its 1970s performances offer a useful view of how visual storytelling developed before modern electronics and amplification.
